Swedish Breakfast
Unique Facts about Swedes' Breakfast Culture
Let's start from clearing up the myths. Despite the crazy popularity of the Swedish meatballs (hello, Ikea!) and Swedish pancakes around the world, they are not eaten for breakfast.
Most Swedes generally like to eat the same type of breakfast every day. It should be mentioned that Swedes eat their breakfast at home; going out for the first meal of the day is an unusual thing.
The average Swedish breakfast consists of two slices of bread with butter and cheese, a boiled egg, and a cup of drip coffee, with yogurt / sour milk. Swedish sandwich is called smörgås.
Smörgås is a compound word with smör meaning butter and gås meaning goose. How come these two words were combined? There is no one answer, but people have a few theories. One is that while the butter was being churned it looked like a goose. Another is that goose was perhaps a popular topping for Swedes a long time ago. Whatever the case, smörgås is now the most common way to describe a sandwich in Sweden.
According to a 2019 poll by YouGov, the top 5 most popular breakfast among Swedes are:
1. Sandwich (55%)
2. Filmjölk (Buttermilk) or Yoghurt (34%)
